Abstract
This study has been to performed to examine relationships between personality traits, self?determination, and the stages of exercise behavior change in Korean older adults. This cross?sectional study included 190 community?dwelling Korean older adults(Male: 81, Female: 109) aged 61 to 98(M: 69.6, SD : 6.9). Subjects in the precontemplation(n=54, 28.4%), contemplation(n=33, 17.4%), preparation(n=54, 28.4%), action(n=14, 7.4%), and maintenance stages(n=35, 18.4%) completed a series of questionnaires including demographic information questionnaire, the stages of exercise behavior change questionnaire, behavioral regulation in exercise (BREQ), and NEO Five Factor Inventory (NEO FFI ). Ordinal logistic regressions utilizing proc CATMOD and proc GENMOD in SAS were performed with the stages of exercise behavior change as the outcome variance and eleven predictors: gender, education, five personality traits including neuroticism, extroversions, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness, and four self?regulation scales including extrinsic, introjected, identified and intrinsic regulation. Proc CATMOD identified that two personality traits, neuroticism, conscientiousness, and all 4 self regulation scales, intrinsic, identified, introjected, and extrinsic regulation were significantly associated with the stages of exercise behavior changes. Proc GENMOD identified that identified regulation, intrinsic regulation and overall self?determination distinguished the precontemplation stage; conscientiousness distinguished the contemplation; identified regulation, neuroticism and conscientiousness distinguished the preparation stage; extrinsic, introjected and identified regulations and overall self?determination distinguished the action stage; and intrinsic regulation, overall self?determination and conscientiousness distinguished the maintenance stage.
